Book Review and a Giveaway - 7 Men and the Secret of their Greatness by Eric Metaxas
7 Men and the Secret of their Greatness is written by Eric Metaxas and is published by Thomas Nelson.
You might recognize the name of this book's author, Eric Metaxas. He also wrote the bestselling Bonhoeffer: Pastor, Martyr, Prophet, Spy as well as Amazing Grace: William Wilberforce and the Heroic campaign to End Slavery. He is also on Breakpoint, Chuck Colson's radio ministry. Incidentally, Chuck Colson is one of the "7 men" discussed in this book.
7 Men and the Secret of their Greatness is broken down into seven chapters, each one devoted to a man of incredible courage and strength. Are we talking about physical strength? Of course not. These men were chosen for the book because they had great inner strength that is well and above that of the average person who goes about his daily life as if great strength is no longer needed.
In today's world, do we lack men who stand strong for faith and values? I think they are few and far between, yet still exist. I don't think that Mr. Metaxas believes they are missing from society, but yet men of honesty, courage and charity may some day be nonexistent due to a lack of serious role models. Honestly, who does mainstream society elevate these days? Certainly not those who fight for freedom and the oppressed (Bonhoeffer and Wilberforce). Certainly not those who place the great country of the United States of America above personal gain (George Washington). Certainly not those who run against the grain in order to do the right thing (Chuck Colson).
But those heroes were and are out there. We just need to find them and encourage them (reading this book is one way) and let them inspire a whole generation of men to be MEN.
7 Men and the Secret of their Greatness is an interesting and inspiring book that I found to be fascinating. I learned things about these seven men that I did not previously know. For instance, Chuck Colson could have escaped prison by telling a lie, but he didn't. I had always assumed that he pled innocent and then was convicted by jury. This wasn't the case at all. Chuck Colson did the right thing and paid the price. But wow, what a testimony that man later had - with eternal reward. His witness for Christ is now much more relevant than had he, at the time, taken the easy way out of a temporal situation.
If you have a husband, son, son-in-law, or friend whom you would like to encourage in his walk as a man of virtue and worth, get him this book. My own husband can't wait to get his hands on my copy - which I'll hand over now.
