Demonic "Hotel California" by the Eagles - What Do You Think?
As a young Christian in the early 1980's I was quickly introduced to the Christian interpretation of Hotel California (written and performed by the Eagles in 1977). The album won a Grammy Award for Album of the Year in '77.
Hotel California has haunting lyrics and an even more haunting musical score (at least it does for me). The question back then - and, for some - now is this: Does the Hotel California refer to the church of Satan, as many Christians through the years have claimed?
The Eagles' Glenn Frey said this about the lyrics:
"That record explores the under belly of success, the darker side of Paradise. Which was sort of what we were experiencing in Los Angeles at that time. So that just sort of became a metaphor for the whole world and for everything you know. And we just decided to make it Hotel California. So with a microcosm of everything else going on around us." (song facts)
The song, according to the Eagles, was about the drugs, alcohol, and fast life that embodies much of the music industry in California. The group, originally from the Midwest, was thrown into a culture that literally sucked them into something much darker than they knew existed.
As to "the other side of the story", I could find very little about the stories of which I'd heard back in the '80s. Wickepedia says this:
"In the 1980s, some Christian evangelists alleged that "Hotel California" referred to a San Francisco hotel purchased by Anton LaVey and converted into the Church of Satan. Other rumors suggested that the Hotel California was the Camarillo State Mental Hospital. These claims have been consistently denied by the band."
There are some words in the song that might imply that the evangelists are correct. Some parallels:
The Satanic Bible was written in 1969. The Church of Satan is in California. The Beast in the song could easily mean the Beast in The Book of Revelation (The Holy Bible). Once you've sold your soul to the devil, can you ever get it back for God? (i.e. "You can check out any time you like, but you can never leave.")
And then there is the fact that The Eagles themselves have stated that the words and music almost wrote themselves.....that's the same response that J. K. Rowling has made regarding her creation, Harry Potter.
My feelings about this song and any demonic influences? I just don't know for sure, but I will say that the song haunts me for quite while after I hear it. I don't particularly feel good about it. For the record, however, I do feel that the Eagles are an amazingly talented group.

Do You Remember These
I wasn't around in the fifties, but as a child in the sixties and seventies, I do remember some of these - especially Betty and Veronica. My dad was an avid collector and reader of the Archie comics. He still has boxes of the old ones somewhere in his house.
I'd like to think that "those were the good ole days." The truth is, these days will one day be the "good ole days." What are we doing to make them special memories?

Letters to God - A Must-see
My family watched Letters to God this week. While it's always tough watching films that deal with topics such as cancer, this one left me feeling hopeful. Hopeful? About disease and suffering?
YES!
The reason this movie gave me hope is because it deals honestly with the hope of the Bible. Tyler, age eight and struggling with cancer, writes letters to God. He sends them through the U.S. mail system - puts stamps on them and all. The letters are prayers to a God this amazing little boy knew, I mean personally knew.
That, my friends, is what I mean by hope.
God answered Tyler's prayers as only God can. If that doesn't move you, nothing will.
I haven't found many movies I felt I could recommend lately. This one I can. It is one of the best movies I have watched in a very long time. Many libraries have Letters to God on their shelves. That's where I found it. Check around.

Saturday Scripture Speaks - God is God
Psalm 50:19-23 (NKJV) says,
"You give your mouth to evil,
And your tongue frames deceit.
You sit and speak against your brother;
You slander your own mother’s son.
These things you have done, and I kept silent;
You thought that I was altogether like you;
But I will rebuke you,
And set them in order before your eyes.
“Now consider this, you who forget God,
Lest I tear you in pieces,
And there be none to deliver:
Whoever offers praise glorifies Me;
And to him who orders his conduct aright
I will show the salvation of God.”

We make the mistake, all too often, in believing that God is like us. He is not. Man (and woman) is made in the image of God, rather than God made in the image of man. God is sovereign and is above all else. "Now I know that the LORD is greater than all the gods; for in the very thing in which they behaved proudly, He was above them.” Exodus 18:11 (NKJV)
Steven Curtis Chapman's song, God is God, speaks volumes on this subject. If you have troubles in this world, take comfort. God is God and we are not. He is sovereign and is in total control - read the Book of Revelation and read it with hope and promise rather than with fear and trembling. Christians have no need to fear future events. GOD IS GOD!

Sausage Outside

She's With Me by Collin Raye
This song, about Collin Raye's granddaughter, is so special. It puts me in mind of one of the tragedies of recent history - the murder of Terri Schiavo. The difference is that Collin Raye shows the other side of loving and living. Jesus loves His children. We'd better also. I hope you enjoy this video as much as I do.
