How interested are you in furniture for your home? I've been looking mine over the past week, mostly because I was expecting a houseful for Josh's graduation party. We have such mismatched (and old) stuff in our house it's ridiculous. I'm not talking old as in antiques either. I mean stuff from, say, the 1970's. And we have a counter bar with no bar stools - just broken kitchen chairs.
Truthfully, materialism is defined as "the theory or attitude that physical well-being and worldly possessions constitute the greatest good and highest value in life." (www.english-test.net)
The greatest good and highest value in life, for me and countless other Christians, is found in the person (and relationship with) Jesus Christ. His arms are the ones I'll run into when I leave behind all worldly possessions at the end of my earthly life.
Is it wrong, therefore, to purchase nice furniture with which to decorate my home? Not at all, as long as I can afford to buy it. God wants us to be filled with joy and happiness. That can include beautiful possessions here. That does NOT include worshiping the possessions. Wisdom knows the difference.

I would say we are in the same boat. We do have a new table and chairs in our dining room but other that that it is hand me downs or nothing. We do not even own a couch for the den or living room. One day..we watch tv as a family on our bed in my bedroom. Pretty sad to some degree but then on the other hand its a family time that will always be talked about.
