'For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and the two will become one flesh.' So they are no longer two, but one. Mark 10:7-8 (NIV)
Some Pharisees sought to trap Jesus by asking him, "Is it lawful for a man to divorce his wife?" (verse 2). Moses had allowed men to divorce their wives by giving certificates of divorce and sending them away.
Jesus told the Pharisees that the reason Moses had allowed divorce was because of the Israelites' hard hearts. He went on to say that divorce was never in God's plan and that marriage was, from the very beginning, meant to last.
What really hits me with this passage is the part where Jesus says, "They are no longer two, but one."
How do two people become one flesh?
My husband and I are celebrating our 22nd wedding anniversary today. I wonder if we are "one flesh." We are two very different people with very different ideas, yet if the God says that two are one, that's that. I believe that God's intention is for a husband and wife to work together in the marriage to the point that they make a "whole person." My body doesn't work unless all of the individual parts cooperate with each other. Together, my arms, legs, feet, head, etc. make one body.
The Bible also says that Jesus is the bridegroom and the church is His bride. We can apply what we know about physical marriage to a spiritual marriage with Christ. We are to "forsake all others" and become one with our Savior. This week let's try to keep Jesus primary in our lives and remember that without Him, we are only half a (spiritual) person.
