Tackle it Tuesday - Sewing

Some of you might think that this is not much of a "tackle" project, but for this poor seamstress, it is.

My daughter received a cute t-shirt that matches one of mine. Great. Problem is it is a big large and long. It was too short to make it a dress and not warm enough to sleep in during the cold winter months.

You've seen those t-shirt dresses in the department stores, haven't you? A lot of them have really flouncy ruffles on the bottom and are adorable. I had a brainstorm: Why not make one with this t-shirt and some left-over fabric a friend gave me last year?

Well, I tried and you'll see what happens when you make a mistake while sewing.

Here's what I started with - the t-shirt and some knit fabric that matched.

I measured what I thought was twice the girth of the shirt for the width; then I measured the length to be a couple of inches longer than necessary to allow for a hem and a seam.

I gathered across the top and tried to ruffle the fabric. Lo and behold that didn't work because I only measured ONCE around the girth, forgetting that the t-shirt has a front AND a back! Well, I couldn't gather the fabric for a ruffle effect, but I was able to sew the piece across the bottom of the t-shirt. I hemmed it and here's what we have:

Terrible job but Amanda loves it and wears it almost daily with a sweater. I learned something from this and will remember not to tackle a project like this at any other time than the early morning because it's the only time of day I'm alert and using my brain.

I understand completely--my brain turns of around mid-afternoon and doesn't start up again until early morning. I am definitely a morning person! It's nice your daughter likes it though even if it didn't turn out as you intended!

I'm sorry you messed up the t-shirt dress. I know how aggravating it is to have a sewing project go wrong (which all mine do at least once).

Are you sure you don't want to come over and help me fold clothes? At least there's no sewing involved.

oh wow. you mean I'm not the only who makes those kinds of mistakes??
So happy she loves it!
