Moving Toward .... What?

I honestly think our country is moving more and more toward a communist state, or a socialist one at best, and it's beginning with our smaller communities. Our tiny rural town (talking teensy here, like blink and you miss it sort of thing) held a zoning commission meeting tonight, which Jeff and Josh attended. The commission was going to try to slip something through:

THEY WANTED TO PUT IN A CITY SEWER SYSTEM, AT A COST OF $2000 UP FRONT PAYMENT FROM EACH HOMEOWNER, ALONG WITH A MONTHLY CHARGE OF $130!

Here's the problem - nobody here has $2000 in pocket. There are no jobs here. The house on the next block is up for sale at a town auction because it was foreclosed (sad because it was a young couple with a baby). If city sewer is put in, we'll all need to have city water because our wells will be contaminated (something to do with the sand we all live in). Anyone want to guess what the city water will cost us when we all had good wells before the stinking sewer system went in?

Here was the sewer pushers' greatest argument, "If McDonald's wants to put a restaurant at the exit here, they won't be able to do it without city sewer and water!" Well, I don't know about anyone else, but I DO NOT WANT A MCDONALD'S IN MY BACKYARD!!!!

OK, the extra exclamation points are overkill, but really, we were pretty upset about this thing possibly going through.

Good news is that the thing was voted down because of all the complaints from town people. Case closed until someone brings it back up again, which they will. You see, the town already put a down payment on a very large parcel of land to do this. Might I add that they paid the money down before voting on anything? Bad thing to do, in my opinion.

SO GLAD that didn't go through. Sounds like they're not too with it in the planning department. Hope people are watching for them trying to sneak something in through the back door.....
