Book Review and Giveaway: Parable of the Brown Girl by Khristi Lauren Adams

Parable of the Brown Girl: The Sacred Lives of Girls of Color is a brand spanking new book by Khristi Lauren Adams. This is not a fictional book based upon a parable. Rather, it is a book that looks at real life girls whose personal stories teach us a lesson. The author, Khristi Lauren Adams is a chaplain and teacher who knows the subject well because she herself is a "brown girl".

February is Black History Month, a month that celebrates black women. I like that Adams uses the word brown to describe black skin color. After all, aren't we all some shade of brown - from the lightest person in the world to the darkest?

I have enjoyed reading Parable of the Brown Girl. Through the girls' stories, I felt the same thought hit me over and over. Women are the same inside. We all want to be loved. We all want to be accepted. We all want to know that we aren't the only ones dealing with "stuff" in our lives.

Adams does a great job of letting the reader know that listening to each other is key. God is using the brown girls of this world to make a difference. Let's listen to their voices and help them to know that they are a vital part of God's great story.

GIVEAWAY: I have a copy of Parable of the Brown Girl to give away to a Following31 reader. To enter, simply leave a comment on this post and be sure to include your email address so I can let you know if you win. I will randomly choose a winner on February 29.

In the meantime, be sure to check out the book with clever videos on YouTube. #parableofthebrowngirl

Giveaway - Tropical Traditions Virgin Coconut Oil

**This contest is now closed.**

Gold Label Virgin Coconut Oil - 32 oz.Win 1 quart of Gold Label Virgin Coconut Oil!

Tropical Traditions is America’s source for coconut oil. Their Gold Label Virgin Coconut Oil is hand crafted in small batches by family producers, and it is the highest quality coconut oil they offer. You can read more about how virgin coconut oil is different from other coconut oils on their website: What is Virgin Coconut Oil?

Tropical Traditions also carries other varieties of affordable high quality coconut oil. Visit their website to check on current sales, to learn about the many uses of coconut oil, and to read about all the advantages of buying coconut oil online. Since the FDA does not want us to discuss the health benefits of coconut oil on a page where it is being sold or given away, here is the best website to read about the health benefits of coconut oil.

Are you a big fan of coconut oil? Maybe you've tried it before but weren't too impressed. Maybe you just needed to try a better brand.
I was eager to try Tropical Traditions again, as I originally tried it in my homemade cold pressed soap. It did a wonderful job and I was happy to be  using something organic for a skin product. This time, however, I wanted to try the virgin coconut oil in food - and I did just that.
The first thing I noticed is the brilliant white color of the oil. The cheaper stuff at the grocery store is not organic nor is it virgin oil - and it's color is an off white that is nearly yellow. I'm not sure if that means anything or not, but the organic, virgin coconut oil is purer looking just because of the whiteness. Also, Tropical Traditions has a sweet coconut smell that makes you want to take a spoon and eat it out of the jar. I did not do that, however.

I made a delicious vegan and gluten-free dessert which I have named Blackberry Surprise Pie. Here's what I did:
Take 1 1/2 cups pitted dates and soak them in water for about an hour. Take another 1/2 cup pitted dates and soak them in a separate bowl, in water, for that same hour.

After the dates have soaked, put the 1 1/2 cups dates, 1/4 cup carob powder, 3 Tablespoons Tropical Traditions Virgin Coconut Oil (melted), 1 cup shredded, unsweetened coconut, and 1/4 cup walnuts in a food processor. With the S blade, process until the mixture is very smooth. You might need to stop the processor and stir with a spoon every now and then.

Press the mixture into a 10 inch pie pan, pressing it up the sides. Set aside while you make the filling. Don't bother washing or rinsing the food processor bowl. Put in it:

2 ripe, peeled and pitted avocados and the 1/2 cup soaked dates. Process until smooth and creamy. Place into a large bowl. Stir in 2 teaspoons Stevia powder and 4 cups fresh or frozen blackberries. Fill the date/coconut crust with the blackberry mixture. Sprinkle with a little more shredded coconut. Refrigerate until ready to serve.

This is the best "pie" I've had in a long time. The filling color will have a green color to it but it does not taste like avocados in the least. It tastes like a chocolate/fruit pie with lots of coconut chewiness and flavor bursting through. And the best part is there is NO refined sugar.

If you would like to "experiment" in your own kitchen with some Tropical Traditions Virgin Coconut Oil too, this is your chance to do so with a free jar! Here's how to enter:

Mandatory entry: Subscribe to Tropical Traditions' newsletter here. Then come back here and tell me you did so. Be sure to leave your e-mail address so I can contact you should you win.

Bonus entry: Tell me how you would use virgin coconut oil in a comment.

This contest is open to residents of the United States and Canada only. Contest ends February 28. Winner will be chosen shortly thereafter and will receive a quart jar of Tropical Traditions Virgin Coconut oil, shipped by the company.

Disclaimer: Tropical Traditions provided me with a free sample of this product to review, and I was under no obligation to review it if I so chose. Nor was I under any obligation to write a positive review or sponsor a product giveaway in return for the free product.

Book Review - Dog Trots Globe by Sheron Long

**Giveaway is closed**

Dog Trots Globe - To Paris Provence is written by Sheron Long and is published by OIC Books.

I had a wonderful time flipping through this delightful travel book as told through the eyes of Chula, a Sheltie. There are tons of pictures of various places in and around Paris and Provence, France. The reader travels along with this delightful dog as she goes from flowering fields to sidewalk cafes to every place in between.

My mother's side of the family is French and I have traced my ancestors to France. It is a lot of fun to take a virtual tour of Paris, from which these relatives hail.

Included in Dog Trots Globe is a section at the back where Ms. Long gives advice for pet owners as they plan their vacations. Taking a pet halfway around the world on a jet can be eough to frighten off even the most seasoned traveler. Ms. Long's advice is solid and helpful. She says to prepare for paperwork. I'm sure there's ton of it.

I enjoyed Dog Trots Globe - To Paris & Provence a whole lot, and I think you will too. In fact, I'm so sure of it that I'm giving away a copy to one of my readers. To win, follow the instructions below:

The giveaway is open to residents of the United States and Canada.

*Leave a comment telling me your favorite place to visit. It can be a foreign country, another state, or simply your parent's house. Leave your e-mail address if it's not easily available on your profile.*

For an extra entry in the giveaway, follow me on Twitter and let me know you did. Leave your Twitter name and your e-mail address.

The giveaway ends on November 25. I'll contact the winner shortly thereafter for mailing address.

Book Review and Giveaway - Marlow and the Monster by Sharon Cramer

Giveaway is now closed.

Marlow and the Monster is written and illustrated by Sharon Cramer (B & F Publishing)

Marlow is a little boy who receives bedtime visits from a monster. This is not a scary monster, though the monster believes that he is. Marlow, however, finds that the monster is more of a pest. So his dilemma is this: Whatever is he going to do with the thing?

His solution is simple; just give the monster to his sister. Has Marlow solved the problem? Hmmmm.

Marlow and the Monster is a cute story with equally cute pictures. The illustrations are done in quill pen and ink with the monster in vivid watercolor. Ms. Cramer did the monster in color "because only the children can see him." By making the monster goofy rather than scary, she does a terrific job of taking the focus off of terrifying and puts it on something that is more funny and reassuring. I like that.

I enjoyed this picture book and I think you and your little book reading pals will too. In fact, I'll be picking a blog reader to win a copy of Marlow and the Monster. To enter the contest, just leave me a comment telling me the title of a book you enjoyed as a child. If you'd like a bonus entry, share this giveaway post on Twitter or your own blog readers. In a separate comment, let me know who you shared with and leave me the link. Be sure to leave an e-mail address so I can contact you should you win.

Giveaway ends Monday, August 20.

This week only you can get a digital copy of Marlow and the Monster for free on Amazon.

*I received a copy of Marlow and the Monster in exchange for my honest review*

Book Review and a Giveaway - MOMumental by Jennifer Grant

**This giveaway is now closed.**

I read a phenomenal book about motherhood last week. MOMumental by Jennifer Grant (Worthy Publishing) is one of those honest looks at parenting. This is not a lecture book. This is not a serious manual for new moms. What this book encompasses is a realistic look at mothering.

Jennifer Grant is a mother of four children - two boys and two girls. In this book, she takes a sentimental look back at the time when her children were small and she was taking motherhood seriously - perhaps too seriously. She also takes a peek into the future and, in doing so, realizes that raising children is a "messy art" and that she'll never do it perfectly. She will, however, have done it well.

There is hope for all of the moms out there who feel that they aren't doing a tidy job of making sure  their kids are right with the world. I laughed, cried, and cheered with Jennifer as she eloquently told her story of her family. And there you have it. While all of us moms will resonate with this particular mom, we won't have the same story. We're all different and we're raising different kids. At the same time, we're all in this "messy art of raising a family" together. We need to encourage each other with a pat on the back or a shoulder on which to cry. As Jennifer Grant says, "I am grateful for my own happy, idiosyncratic, and imperfect family and the culture we are creating together. I'm doing my best to raise strong children, not broken adults. I wish all of this for you too."

**GIVEAWAY**

I'm giving away one copy of MOMumental to a commenter on this blog. To enter the giveaway, simply leave a comment telling me something about your family, be they children, dogs, cats, whatever. I'll randomly choose a winner on May 21 and mail out the book soon after. This contest is open to United States residents only.

My Memories Suite - Review and a Giveaway

**This contest is now closed.**

I have made scrapbooks for each of my three oldest children for graduation gifts. They love them. However, I have never worked with digital scrapbooks. MyMemories.com is a digital scrapbooking software company that makes digital scrapbooking not only fun, but easy.

Since I am so green at most things digital, I decided to really play around with my new scrapbook software in order to get a real feel for it. After an easy download experience, I received an e-mail from MyMemories. In it were ideas for projects other than the traditional scrapbook. I was intrigued.

So here's what I did. I made a recipe book page using a recipe I'd received from a company by e-mail. I opened up one of the templates that came with my digital scrapbooking software from MyMemories.com. Then, I easily cut and pasted a picture of the final product from the recipe e-mail onto the template. Under that, I typed into a text box the recipe itself. As for the recipe title, I typed that in another text box to the left and above the picture. I intend to make a full recipe book over time....it'll take me a while!

Some facts that I've noticed while using my new scrapbook software:

  • The download can take a little time, but if you're using a broadband or other high speed connection, shouldn't be too cumbersome.
  • It uses Quicktime (at least it does for me).
  • It takes a while to get used to and understand, but the website has helpful user guides, a tutorial, and technical support. In addition, they have a helpful blog.
  • You can do a lot more than simply make scrapbooks.
  • You get a lot with the initial software package. If you want more, it's there for sale at decent prices.
  • It's addictive.
If you would like to order My Memories Suite Scrapbook Software now, you can click on the link on my sidebar. When you order, use the code STMMMS7688 to get $10 off the software. You'll also get $10 off anything at MyMemories.com's store.

If you would like to win your own copy of My Memories Suite, here's what you do:

  1. Mandatory entry: Tell me what you would like to create with digital scrapbooking software in a comment. Please leave your e-mail address so I can contact you should you win.
**Additional Entries**

  1. "Like" MyMemories on Facebook and tell me you did so in a separate comment.
  2.  "Follow" MyMemories on Twitter and tell me you did so in a separate comment.
  3. "Follow" Following31 using Google Connect and tell me you did so in a separate comment.
This giveaway is open until January 5, 2012. The winner will be chosen via Random.org and notified using the e-mail address provided in contest entry. It is the responsibility of the winner to respond to the e-mail before the prize is distributed in order to ensure that the information provided for prize delivery is correct.

Redbox - Win Daily Prizes

Have you found Redbox yet? We like it more than other video rental places (except for the library, of course). For $1.29 a day you get a movie rental. Redbox is convenient and found everywhere. We have one at Meijer, one at Walgreen's, and one at Wal-Mart. Rent a movie and then return it at any Redbox. You do not have to return it to the Redbox from which you rented the movie.

Last night we rented Kung Fu Panda 2. It's a great movie for families to watch together and then discuss the lessons learned. The theme of the movie is: Let go of the hurts of your past and let them make you into a better person - or in their cases, better pandas and peacocks. The movie touches deeply on adoption too. Such a good movie.

Now you can rent a Redbox movie and get a chance to win great prizes. From December 13 to December 24, text FUN to 727272 for instant savings of 25 cents - $1 off of your movie and game rentals, as well as a chance to be entered to win a daily prize from Redbox. Each day, a random drawing will select a winner with top prizes from Sony, Wii, Barnes & Noble, Activision and more. It's a win-win situation.

I say rent Kung Fu Panda and some more family-friendly movies. You will be blessed.

**I received a free Redbox rental in exchange for my honest opinion. Opinions are my own.**

Phix Energy Drinks - and a GIVEAWAY!

***This giveaway is now closed***

Do you like energy drinks? Or do you avoid them because of all of the harmful ingredients most of them contain?

I had not had an energy drink in more than a year (I used to be hooked on the coffee flavored ones). Like most health conscious people, I had researched them and found that they potentially cause more problems than they are worth.

Natural food companies are getting smart - they're finding that there's a market out there for energy drinks, but for those that are beneficial to the body rather than detrimental.

Phix is one such company. They make a great tasting, all natural pick-me-upper that gives the body energy without the crashes that sugar loaded, carbonated drinks do. They are gluten-free and vegan, so you don't have to worry about any of that stuff wreaking havoc on your digestive system.

The only ingredient that gives me pause is maltodextrin, which I found on the Phix label (at the end, so it's the smallest amount). If you aren't familiar with maltodextrin, it is a sugar that is made by breaking down a starch - which in the U.S. can only be from corn, potato, or rice. Companies in Europe, however, often use wheat. Phix is manufactured in the U.S. and is guaranteed to be gluten-free, so don't worry about that. Maltodextrin does NOT contain malt. It is an additive that many, many store-bought foods contain.

I tested some Phix Natural Energy Drinking Powder last week and, I have to tell you, enjoyed it. I agree that it provides energy. I was drowsy before drinking it, but after about ten minutes, found that the sleepiness was gone. I did not feel "on edge", but I felt alert. As for the taste, I like it. My favorite is either tea berry or tropic - they're equally good. There's an additional flavor, citron, which is good too.

Phix is a green company. They use compostable and biodegradable materials in their packaging - another plus.

Would you like to win a month's supply of Phix Natural Energy Drinking Powder in your favorite flavor? Here's how:

**A randomly chosen comment will be chosen on November 30 to win three boxes (a one month's supply) of Phix Natural Energy Drinking Powder (in flavor of his or her choice). Winner will also receive a 25% off coupon code toward a future purchase of Phix Energy. This contest is open to United States residents only.**

MANDATORY ENTRY: Leave a comment on this post telling me your favorite way to energize. If your e-mail address is not easily found on your profile, please be sure to leave it in the comments.

ADDITIONAL ENTRIES:

1. "Like" Phix Energy on Facebook and then post back here telling me you did so.

2. "Follow" Phix Energy on Twitter and then post back here telling me you did so.

3. "Follow" me on Twitter and then post back here telling me you did so.

**I received free product from Phix Energy and BSM Media in exchange for my honest review. Opinions are my own.**

Misc. Doings

This is not a Tackle it Tuesday post, but it does highlight some of the things I've been doing these days. I haven't kept anybody posted as to my weight loss/get healthy venture in a while. The diet has gone well and I still eat more healthy than not. Since June 1, I have lost 22 pounds and am now at a comfortable weight, though not where I would ideally like to be. Still, to be back in the normal body mass ratio is wonderful. The diet I follow is a conglomoration of many diets. I keep bad carbohydrates mostly out of my meals, though I splurge once in a great while. I have one cup of coffee a day (99% of the time) and only in the morning before I eat anything. I wait an hour and then have a simple breakfast, usually a bowl of oatmeal (old-fashioned oats) with berries sprinkled into it. I rarely eat sugar and when I do, I tend to use stevia or raw, unfiltered honey. I limit meat to once or twice a week. I have plenty of green salads, lots of veggies (if you read my menu plans you'll notice I like green beans). When I use milk it's skim. I make my own yogurt and I never sweeten it. I use it often in smoothies, but again, I don't use sugar. I am still gluten-free and have no desire to go back to the gummy, rotten stuff. I have given up soda pop for good. I TRY to get lots of water down, but often forget. I walk a lot for exercise. I stay busy.

I have dropped FOUR sizes and am finding I might have to hunt for smaller jeans. I am not focusing on food - I'm focusing on my love for Jesus. I'm finding that ministry is more important than food and the body. Food and the body are temporal - what we do for Christ is eternal. Get my eyes off of me and things fall into their proper places.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Something else going on is Small Business Saturday on November 26. America's small businesses are what keeps her going. I have pledged to shop my local small businesses on November 26. Won't you join in? Take the pledge and you might win one of 100 $25 American Express gift cards to use that day.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I am  the new librarian at our local branch of our county's public library. I work 4 hours a day. It has been a great thing so far. I keep busy there for the most part, meet new people, and get the chance now and then to impart Christian values. Do I preach to them? Of course not. I simply talk to them about whatever subject they bring up. I kid you not, I have been asked to give recommendations for Christian books, talk about my church, and even discuss the Bible. People are hungry for the Truth. I have to conclude that this might be the reason the job fell into my lap. I prayed for a ministry in my village and I'm getting it - plus a little extra cash.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I am on jury duty for November. I've only had to show up at the court house once so far. I was not chosen for the jury. I know too many people involved with the case, from the defending lawyer to many of the witnesses for the defense. Then there's the fact that my son is a county deputy, which makes me biased for the prosecution as well. I spent 8 hours at the court house on jury selection day and, though I got tired, learned a tremendous amount of legal stuff - fascinating stuff. When you get chosen for jury duty, don't grumble. Rather, consider it your DUTY to serve - and to do so with a good attitude and spirit.

New Giveaway - Stacks of Books!

**Giveaway is now closed.**

Over the course of the past several months, I have accumulated quite a lot of good books - mostly as a result of some book reviews I've done. I'm literally running out of bookshelf space! I would like to extend to my readers some of these great books - for the most part, the books are overtly Christian. Most of the books have just been read once and then plopped onto a bookshelf. Some of the titles are: Lost Boy by Greg Laurie, Max on Life by Max Lucado, and my most recent read, Life Support by Robert Whitlow.

As time goes on, I'll have more to give away at another time. I'll see how popular this particular giveaway becomes :)

If you would like to win a stack of FIVE to SIX good books, just leave a comment below telling me the title and author of one of your favorite books. On August 20, I'll choose TWO winners to each receive a stack of real, physical books. Sorry, I don't have electronic copies of books. I prefer to feel and smell a good book. The mustier, the better.

If you'd like to have more chances to win, do one or all of the following:

  1. Follow me on Twitter. Leave a separate comment with your twitter ID.
  2. Blog about this giveaway and give me the URL in a separate comment.
  3. Tweet about the giveaway and leave the tweet URL in a separate comment.
  4. Follow this blog and let me know you did so in another comment.
  5. Subscribe to this blog and let me know you did so in a separate comment.
Winners will be chosen via Random.org. No special treatment is given for friends or family, so everyone can feel free to enter - just be sure that you live in the United States (48 lower states), please.

Time Island Review & Giveaway!

Time Island is a game about which you might or might not have heard. My daughter, age 9, loves to play computer games. I don't like a lot of the electronic games out there. They're either too old for her, too young, or (more often than not) not good for anyone, young or old, to play. Time Island is just about right.

So, here is what Time Island is about:

It is a virtual world where kids learn about nature and survival, while playing with other kids around the world - in a safe environment. When my daughter signed on, she didn't get immediate access to the site. I received an e-mail which contained a link that I had to first activate. I was able to read the rules before I decided if it was okay for her to play or not. I can't tell you how important it is to have parents involved in their children's online activities. THIS IS GOOD!

Amanda has had a load of fun playing with her avatar and navigating her through some pretty interesting "wild" places. I like that the game is fun, educational, and safe.

If your child would like to win a Time Island "goodie bag", you've come to the right place. I'll choose a winner from the comment section on this post - goodie bag includes bracelets, tattoos, a bandana, and more. To enter, just leave me a comment that answers this question: "What is your greatest concern when it comes to the online activities of your children?"

I'll choose a winner on August 1, 2011 via Random.org.

*I received a Time Island Fun Pack as part of a promotional program with Time Island and MomSelect. The opinions expressed are my own.*

Review - Fotolia.com and a Giveaway

Have you ever wanted to spruce up your blog post with great photos pertinent to the subject of which you're writing, but don't have them on your own camera? Ever wonder where people get those great photos? An awful lot of bloggers buy subscriptions for stock photos from places such as Fotolia.com.

When you need a picture to use on the web (or elsewhere), you can't just copy them from anywhere, for free or otherwise, without having permission - unless the photos are in the public domain (copyright ran out). The same rules hold true for words and video if they aren't original with you. You can find great images and videos to use, royalty free, at Fotolia.com. I found the following two images by doing a quick search using the word, "Christian".

You can sell your photos too. Just a thought.

Djordje Korovljevic - Fotolia.com

vanda - Fotolia.com

Fotolia is supplying a 14-day subscription (3 images per day) to their site to TWO of Following 31's readers. It's a great way for you to try it out before you decide to buy.

If you'd like to be entered into the giveaway, please leave a comment below. Any comment will do. Giveaway ends June 11, 2011 at 11:59 p.m. (est) Winners chosen via Random.org.

*I received an incentive from Fotolia.com in exchange for this review. Opinions expressed are my own.*

Country Bob's All-Purpose Sauce Review and Giveaway

**This contest is now closed.**

(picture from Country Bob's)

From time to time I get the chance here at Following 31 to sample products in exchange for my honest review. This time I sampled Country Bob's All Purpose Sauce. My family and I thank the folks who sent it because we LOVED it!

Country Bob Edson created what he felt was the perfect sauce in 1968 but didn't begin marketing it until 1977. I suspect his family and friends often said something like this: "You really should sell it!" Of course it became a huge seller, as it remains today. Since that time, other sauces were created and sold - but the original is still going strong.

We used the sauce on sirloin tip steaks, a real treat for us. Country Bob's All Purpose Sauce is tangy but not overly spicy. The best thing about it (for me anyway) is that it is gluten-free. Careful - not every brand of steak sauce is. We used up one whole bottle in one meal. We were either starved for steak sauce or Country Bob's is just really good. I tend to believe the latter is true.

You can use steak sauce in place of Worcestershire sauce in recipes. If you'd like some recipe ideas, find some here. I think it'd be really good in meatloaf. My vegetarian son used Country Bob's on his baked potato.

My local Wal-mart Supercenter sells this sauce. Yours probably does too. If you can't find it locally (check the store finder), you can order it online.

Now, for the giveaway

Country Bob's is graciously giving two of my readers two bottles of All Purpose Sauce. Would you like to win? Here's how to enter:

If the winners do not respond to the e-mail within 48 hours, alternate winners will be chosen. Prizes will be sent to the winners directly from Country Bob's.
